Yard Clean Up and Parking

The Yard Clean Up that began last Tuesday continues this coming Tuesday (July 13) at 5:30 pm.  Thanks are extended to the over 30 volunteers that came out to move a substantial amount of just about everything to the dumpsters.  New dumpsters have arrived and if you can make a couple of hours available this coming Tuesday it would be appreciated.  Please remember to have items taken home that you do not want disposed of.

Long-term parking (should be less then 1/2 hour) on the causeway  leading to "A" dock and in the "A" Dock unloading area is not permitted. Please use these areas for loading and unloading only and then be kind enough to move your vehicle to the ample amount of parking we have in the yard when you are finished.

Thanks for your assistance and cooperation.

Canada Day Race

The Canada Day Race will be held in the harbour this year, conditions permitting, and all boat owners are invited to join the fleet in the harbour for a show of sail.  The slack tide is at 1:45 pm.  Various factors will affect the race including fog, lack of wind and harbour traffic and it may be relocated to the St. John River if conditions are not conducive to a race in the harbour.  Final decision will be made on Thursday morning as to the location... but the plan at this time is to race in the harbour and have as many boats as possible go for a sail.

There will not be a single handed race this Thursday evening (Canada Day) due to its conflict with our plan to hold the Canada Day race in the Harbour.   The next single handed race will be Thursday, July 8th.

Yard and Grounds Clean Up

A yard & grounds clean will happen on Tuesday(s) July 6 & July 13 and volunteers are asked to help out by arriving at 5:30 pm for a couple of hours to help clean up. The Marine Services folks will provide the necessary heavy equipment to assist in the project.

Members should identify and remove any  equipment & materials that they own and have lying around the yard or in the spar shed before that date. Otherwise it'll be considered garbage and disposed of.

Thanks for your assistance and cooperation.

Goodbye Gannet IV

Gannet IV

It was a sad day for long-time senior member Ron Gard, right, on May 26 as he bid a fond farewell to his beloved Vertue 25, Gannet IV. “Arguably one of the finest wooden boats this Club has ever had,” according to yacht broker Ernest Hamilton, Gannet IV had been a fixture around the Club for about 20 years. Built in 1955 for a Canadian naval officer at the E.K. Elkin boat yard in England, she was shipped to her first home port, the Royal Nova Scotian in Halifax, on the deck of a navy destroyer. Ron Gard was just her second owner. Gannet IV was sold to Bill Clapp, left, a wooden boat enthusiast who truly appreciates her many finely crafted features. Her home port will now be the Dutch Wharf Boat Yard near Branford, Connecticut.

Single Handed Keel Boat Races

A small group of RKYC members have expressed an interest in starting up a regular (weekly) "single handed keelboat races" at the Club. After discussions with Chris Herrington of the race committee, I agreed to canvass the membership to determine the level of interest. If we have enough interested members, say, 10 to 12, Chris has agreed to assist with arranging race starting officials. One club member has already offered to sponsor this event for year end prizes. The races may take place on a Thursday evening (about 6:30 PM) as we would not want to compete for participants with Monday or Wednesday racing, nor would we want to be racing at the same time, and on the same course, as fully crewed boats.

If enough members (10 to 12) who express serious interest, I think it will work. Please advise me, by return email  if you would be interested. After compiling the numbers we will determine if it is 'a go' and proceed from there.

Adult Learn to Sail

Because of interest, Doug Orford has organized an Adult Learn to Sail Program running Thursday evenings through the summer.  If you know of someone that might be interested, send us an email at Manager@rkyc.nb.ca and we will forward on to Doug.
Thanks

SJHS & HVHS, Collaboration In Action
HorsesOn Monday May 3, 2010, students from Saint John High and Harbour View pooled their talents to construct no less than 30 saw horses for a local organization. Ross Phinney, an avid sailor, came up with the idea of having his Applied Tech class and Mr. Fisher’s Framing & Sheathing class work together to build the horses for the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club.  It was an easy sell for Mr. Morgan of HVHS who too is an avid sailor and member of the club.    The RKYC not only supplied the materials, but generously provided pizza and refreshments for the students involved.   From Mr. Phinney and Mr. Fisher’s accounts, the day was a great learning experience, a lot of fun and overall great success; sentiments their students shared.   In fact, they have been thinking of another project that could be done in the future.

Commodore's Welcome 2010

Welcome to the Royal Kennebeccasis Yacht Club. You will find our rich history and passion for boating resonates throughout the club- from our charming club house with stunning sunset views, to the natural beauty of Brothers Cove, to a friendly, knowledgeable membership who are always willing to lend a hand to assist the club or community at large.

Our club manager, Gary Arthurs and the executive members help guide the day to day operation. Our Yard manager, Bob Barnes and many members volunteer to prepare the Marina and boats for launch and haul-out. This unique teamwork has proven to create a very successful operation and a membership that is close to maximum capacity.

Our goal over the next year is to provide improved communication and services for our members and guests. If you see aspects of our operation in which we can improve, I would invite you to inform me personally or any of our staff or executive. We will as a team see how the club can provide an improved experience.

Yours Very Sincerely,

Kenneth C. W. Salmon
